SHCEC PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Seasoned Adults Living Triumphantly (S.A.L.T)

Salt Program Volunteer.jpeg.jpg

Aging is both a natural and inevitable part of life. While maintaining a sense of independence is a priority for many aging adults, the resources to facilitate aging in place are limited for seniors living in small rural communities. Our Seasoned Adults Living Triumphantly or SALT program provides information, supportive services, and connections to state and local resources to those 65 years of age and older enabling them to live safe, healthy, and fulfilled lives in their homes as they age.

Every Kids Needs Fun

There is a well-documented mental health crisis among children in our country today. Recreation has been shown to be an effective tool for supporting the social-emotional development of children, of all ages, into healthy adulthood. Like any life skill, recreation requires intentional instruction and support, but also access. Every Kid Needs Fun provides grants for income-challenged families to enroll their children in organized sports programs. These confidential grants are awarded to cover registration, equipment, and/or insurance costs, leveling the playing field so all kids can experience the joy and benefits of play.

Secret Angels

In keeping with SHCEC’s mission of putting God’s love into action, the Secret Angels program provides one-time random acts of kindness to uplift and support individual residents of Nottoway County who may find themselves in need of a little  “divine intervention” to address a critical short-term need. Recipients are identified by SHCEC community volunteers, Board members, area churches, and local social service agencies. Assistance this year has included: securing diapers and baby formula for a single mother with a special needs child; payment of co-pays for emergency dental surgery and medications not covered by insurance for low-income seniors; emergency relocation assistance for a victim of domestic violence and her children; and provision of emergency  transportation to medical treatment appointments, obtain medications, and fulfill caregiving responsibilities.
